Effective 9 August 2026 · applies to the Folio desktop app, the Folio mobile app, and this website.

This policy is short because there is almost nothing to disclose. Folio is built so that we cannot see your financial data — there are no Folio servers, no accounts, and no analytics. What follows is everything the software actually does with data, stated plainly.

The short version

• Your data lives on your computer and in cloud storage you control. It is never sent to us.
• There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no ads in any Folio app.
• No analytics or tracking of any kind, in the apps or on this site.
• We don't sell data — we never have it in the first place.

The desktop app

Folio for Mac and Windows reads the broker statements you give it and stores everything it derives in a local database on your computer. If you enable the optional AI-assisted import, the statement you are importing is sent to the AI provider you configured with your own API key, under that provider's terms — Folio adds no key, no proxy, and no copy of its own. Market prices come from public quote sources; those requests carry ticker symbols, never your positions or amounts.

If you turn on backup & sync, Folio writes two files encrypted with AES-256-GCM into a folder you choose — typically one your own cloud (iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox…) syncs. The encryption key is generated on your computer and never leaves storage you control. Your cloud provider stores only ciphertext it cannot read.

The mobile app

Folio for iPhone and Android is a read-only companion. It reads the encrypted snapshot the desktop published, using the key you transferred yourself by scanning a code. The snapshot stays encrypted on the phone at rest; the key lives in the device keychain.

The mobile app makes exactly one kind of network request: with Live prices on (Settings), it asks Yahoo Finance for current quotes. That request contains the ticker symbols of your open positions and nothing else — no amounts, no identifiers, no account. You can switch it off, and the app then shows only the prices your desktop published.

What we never do

• No bank or broker logins — Folio never asks for credentials to any financial institution.
• No Folio account and no email address.
• No analytics, telemetry, crash reporters, or advertising SDKs.
• No selling or sharing of personal data, because none is collected.

This website

This site is static and self-contained — pages, typefaces and images are all served together, with no analytics and no cookies. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, and the download buttons ask GitHub's API for the latest version number, so GitHub receives the standard technical logs any web server sees (IP address, browser user agent). Your language choice is kept in your own browser's storage and never sent anywhere. The apps themselves load nothing from this site.

Changes and contact
